Barbecue summer

It seems that we’re finally starting to see a bit of this ‘barbecue summer’ that the Met Office has been waffling on about for the last few months. Actually, we’d take issue with this term. Why does a bit more sun and a bit less rain automatically mean a Barbie is in order? What about tea on the lawn? A garden soiree, awash with Pimms or a picnic in the park? Our summer entertaining feature covers all the options.

We’ve also come up with a dozen ideas for keeping the kids busy, from Little Miss manicures at Lucknam Park to screaming round the racetrack at castle Combe. Peter Hall returns to the Theatre Royal with six must-see plays; if you only have time to see one then our season preview should help you to choose the ideal one.
